I HIGHLY RECOMMEND HARBOR BRAKE WITHOUT HESITATION - THEY ARE HONEST, COMPETENT, HELPFUL AND FAIRLY PRICED! I had such a great experience and am so relieved that I am writing my first review on Yelp for them. I have had so many bad experiences with businesses lately, I am feeling more compelled to provide feedback online to honor the businesses that are still doing things right and treating their customers well. My brakes began grinding suddenly, just as I pulled away from getting my tires rebalanced, not what I needed. I haven't yet found a regular mechanic with whom I feel comfortable so my anxiety shot up over now having to find a reputable mechanic that wouldn't rip me off - brakes can get outrageously expensive. I've had a lot of bad experiences lately too. I spent half a day researching places online and finally decided to take my car to Harbor Brake. I mainly chose them because of a glowing recommendation from a life long San Pedro resident and dear friend who reassured me she has been going to them for years and has always found them to be very honest and good people (both the original and subsequent owners). It was a plus that they are local, family owned and had outstanding online reviews. My experience was outstanding. First I called to get some info and spoke with Pinky. Then called back to get more info and make an appointment and talked to Evan. I dropped off my car the next day. The shop is a big, clean space, with plenty of room for the guys to work inside the building (not in outside bays which I worry about in case it's either too cold or too hot since people don't do their best work when physically uncomfortable or distracted). My car was immediately put up on the rack for an initial inspection and I waited for them to check things out and let me know what it needed -- unfortunately both front and rear brakes. Turns out my front brake pads where gonzo and had begun to grind into the rotors (hence the grinding noise). They said I got lucky since the rotors were just within the manufacturer's specs. The rear pads only had 10% left. Evan printed out an estimate to which I agreed. They got to work, saying they would call when the car was ready and I left. I called back a couple minutes later and asked how much it would be to replace the rotors instead of resurfacing them since they were so thin/close to being outside of specs. Evan looked it up and quoted me a reasonable price for replacement, but assured me it wasn't necessary since the measurements were within the manufacturer specs. He explained that they had measured the deepest grooves and advised that the rotors would still be within specs even after they smoothed out the surface. He could have taken this opportunity to get a bunch of extra money from me because I was really on the fence, but instead Evan reassured me that if it were his car, he would just replace the pads and resurface the rotors - that replacement wasn't yet necessary and their condition was safe. Even better. I told them to take their time, but my car was ready within two hours! I dealt with both Evan and Pinky (and a third male employee too) who all communicated well and provided excellent customer service. I can be a talker and they listened carefully, answered all my questions and explained things clearly. I found everyone at HARBOR BRAKE to be very professional, polite, knowledgeable, competent, helpful and accommodating - more importantly I found them to be very HONEST and FAIRLY PRICED. They reminded me of what I might have found years ago in a family owned small business operating with high standards and integrity. I'm thinking the H in Harbor Brake also stands for Honest :-) It's always such a relief these days to find a business and staff you feel you can trust. There's even an article posted from a local magazine with a story about them "giving back." So they are community oriented too. I enjoy supporting such businesses with my patronage. I had an all around great experience in every aspect. I wouldn't hesitate to bring my car back again and will be recommending them to everyone I know! Don't spend hours researching and analyzing reviews like I did, just give Harbor Brake a call and go! I feel confident in saying you'll be very glad you did!
